What is Pilates?

Pilates is a conditioning method that teaches proper movement mechanics while promoting better circulation, coordination and core strength. Pilates also empowers health and well-being.

Pilates incorporates eastern and western philosophies of physical and mental conditioning to create an innovative approach to exercise that develops muscle strength while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Using specialized equipment and floor exercises, the body curls, arches, flexes, extends, twists and glides. Pilates places emphasis on strengthening the muscles of the torso and hips that support the spine and allow the extremities to move freely and efficiently. You’ll notice reduced back pain and alleviated neck and shoulder tension; your posture will improve and your body will feel more collected. You’ll move with better grace and efficiency (and who doesn’t like that?).

Ways to get started

To start your Pilates program, you first want to consider your personal goals as this helps determine how often you’ll work Pilates into your week.

Once a week provides your body with a taste of the all-around core workout that lengthens muscle, bends the spine, and brings the mind and body together. Twice a week boosts healthy circulation, builds strength and endurance in weak muscles, and improves daily movement patterns. Three times a week makes a difference in strength, flexibility, and over all general health. You’ll notice your enjoyment of life improves as does your productivity and efficiency in almost everything you do.

Private instruction is a superb way to begin Pilates. Your instructor will teach your body with appropriate modifications and a tempo suitable for your needs and abilities.

Mat classes, taught in groups of 5-10 people, provide an affordable way to insert Pilates into your existing exercise program.

Our Introductory Package, designed for newcomers to Streamline, provides you with 3 private sessions and 2 mat classes. You’ll be introduced to the entire Streamline studio and the potential from Pilates that awaits you.

You can weave many combinations of sessions and classes into your weekly routine. The most important detail is to make a realistic plan and get started.

FAQ

Will Pilates help my sore back?

Strengthening core muscles and improving the range of motion in your hips usually alleviates most back soreness. Of course, this will vary from person to person depending on the severity or acuity of the pain. Pilates focuses on correct alignment and muscular force, which with repetition, can restore balance to the muscles and bones. When this occurs, the spine decompresses, back pain eases, and your neck and shoulder tension alleviates. If you’re coping with a spinal injury, please check with your doctor’s before embarking on any new exercise program or therapy.

Do I need to be in good shape to do Pilates?

The beauty of Pilates is that the method can be tailored to anybody. We’ll modify the exercises and pace of the exercises to fit your needs, goals and fitness level. We recommend seeking good instruction to determine whether you’re best-suited for group lessons, individual instruction or both.

Is Pilates like yoga?

Pilates exercises were inspired partly by yoga. Like Pilates, most forms of yoga are a series of postures designed to strengthen, open and balance the body. Both Pilates and yoga incorporate strong, full breathing. Some of the Pilates exercises look familiar to yoga postures, but Pilates is more dynamic. The Pilates Method stimulates the musculoskeletal, central nervous and respiratory systems to help prevent re-injury and reduce chronic pain. Yoga strives to integrate all bodily systems, including the organs, lymph, respiratory, central nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

Will I lose weight doing Pilates?

This depends on many factors such as diet, body type, and other activities in your schedule. Pilates has a lovely way of toning and lengthening your musculature, which can make you look and feel as though you’re losing weight. The powerful and tight center acquired while practicing Pilates trims your waistline. More importantly, Pilates restores the energy for your daily activities that extra weight often depletes. You’ll definitely feel longer, taller and more in control of your body.

How often should I do Pilates?

Joseph Pilates said one should do Pilates every day, even if only for 10 or 15 minutes. However, this doesn’t mean you need instruction every day. Instead, you can incorporate a few techniques you’ve learned from your lessons into your daily schedule.

We realize daily Pilates isn’t realistic for everyone, so we recommend that you participate in at least two Pilates sessions each week. Three sessions a week is even better. Those of you who have time for just one session a week will still also notice a difference in how you feel if you continue your practice on a regular basis.
